A native speaker of Japanese, Akina speaks English and Chinese fluently.
She has taught beginners to early advanced students, whose ages range from middle schoolers to adults. She integrates music theory and history into piano lessons so that students can make informed musical choices, while she can also prepare them for ABRSM and RSM exams.
Collaborative Piano
She has worked as a freelance pianist with many singers and instrumentalists, mainly serving for lessons and recitals at West Virginia University. The styles include Classical, Contemporary and Theater/Pop/Jazz. She is also a strong sight-reader.

After taking a long break from piano due to the pandemic, I looked for a piano teacher in my area with the necessary expertise and experience to rebuild and enhance my piano skills. Akina delivered. In the two years she taught me in the WVU Community Music Program, I have broadened my technique and repertoire in piano, as well as grasping elements of music theory to fully understand the musical patterns present in the pieces I learned under Akina. This gift that Akina gave me reconnected me with my passion for piano after COVID-19. Beyond lessons, Akina took utmost pride in blessing the WVU community with recitals and performances, both in the shape of her playing or her students’ playing.
